Ο Πιτροφός είναι ορεινό χωριό της νήσου Άνδρου και βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο 350μ. Το 1928 αριθμούσε 641 κατοίκους. Σήμερα φέρεται με πληθυσμό 305 κάτοικοι (απογραφή 2001). Είναι το πρώτο χωριό του Δήμου Άνδρου Κυκλάδων που συναντά ο επισκέπτης καθώς έρχεται από το κύριο λιμάνι της Νήσου Άνδρου, το Γαύριο, και κατευθύνεται προς την πρωτεύουσα του Νησιού, τη Χώρα. Με το πέρασμα από την περιοχή της Σταυροπέδας εμφανίζεται απλωμένο στην νότια πλαγιά του Πετάλου σε μεγάλη έκταση.

Πρόκειται για μεσόγειο χωριό με μεγάλες για τα δεδομένα της Άνδρου επίπεδες οροπεδιακές εκτάσεις αλλά και πολλές απόκρημνες πλαγιές. Η πλούσια βλάστηση είναι από τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά του, καθώς επίσης και οι πάνω από δέκα διάσπαρτες πηγές του, που αναβλύζουν καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του έτους. Κύρια προϊόντα του χωριού είναι λάδι, σταφύλια, κρασί και δημητριακά. Παλαιότερα είχε και παραγωγή ασβέστη που τροφοδοτούσε το νησί αλλά και τα όμορα νησιά.
Αξιοσημείωτα είναι επίσης και τα αρχαιολογικά μνημεία που βρίσκονται εντός των ορίων του Δημοτικού Διαμερίσματος του Πιτροφού ξεκινώντας από τον Ταξιάρχη της Μελίδας, χριστιανικός ναός, σταυροειδής με τρούλο του 11ου αιώνα, και φτάνοντας μέχρι τον νεολιθικό οικισμό ηλικίας 5000 ετών στην περιοχή του Στρόφιλα. Δυτικά του Πιτροφού υπάρχει ο οικισμός της Μελίδας, όπου διατηρείται ο Βυζαντινός ναός των Ταξιαρχών (12ος αιώνας). Νότια βρίσκεται ο οικισμός Ζαγανιάρι πάνω από την τοποθεσία Ζαγορά, όπου αναπτύχθηκε οικισμός της γεωμετρικής περιόδου. Επίσης στον άνω Πιτροφό βρίσκεται το μουσείο της ελιάς. Ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζει και ο νερόμυλος στην μελίδα. Αναξιοποίητοι είναι οι πάνω από 15 περιστεριώνες του χωριού, χτισμένοι γύρο στο 18ον αιώνα. Ο περιπατητικός δρόμος 9 είναι μεγάλου ενδιαφέροντος, συνατά ο επισκέπτης τα διατηρητέα καλντερίμια, Τις πετρόκτιστες πεζούλες με τα στήματα και τα πάνω από 30 εξωκλήσια.
Το χωριό του Πιτροφού διαθέτει επίσης και δύο αμμώδεις παραλίες, στις οποίες ο αμαξωτός δρόμος φτάνει μέχρι το κύμα: τον Χαλκολιμιώνα και τις Αποθήκες.
Σε πολύ παλαιά έγγραφα ο Πιτροφός γραφόταν με το όνομα "επιστροφός", καθώς και "πίστροφος", αλλά και "πετροφόρος" δλδ ευφορία της πέτρας.
