Our cabin comfortably sleeps 8 guests in cooler months and 10 guests in warmer months (with the use of our fully enclosed sleeping porch). We offer two full bathrooms, multiple sleeping arrangements, multiple living/entertainment areas, and the national forest right outside the door.
We offer a number of amenities for your comfort and enjoyment including a fully supplied kitchen with top-of-the-line dishware and all of the basics for cooking utensils, luxury linens in the bathrooms and primary bedroom (standard linens in secondary bedroom), a well-stocked library of classic and vintage books, a record player with a collection of vintage and classic vinyl, outdoor gear including hiking sticks with hiking packs and binoculars, cooler, fire pit, fishing gear, 2 way radios, and of course all of the modern conveniences including high-speed internet, streaming capabilities, wireless sound system, telescope for star gazing, and many other thoughtful touches.
We are 10 mins from the world-renowned Nantahala Outdoor Center which is at the trailhead of the Appalachian Trail. You'll find there some of the best tubing, white water rafting, fly fishing, zip-lining, rock climbing, hunting, mountain biking, and hiking in the nation within minutes of our cabin.
We’re less than 40 miles from the southern entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Near Cherokee, North Carolina, the Oconaluftee Visitor Center at GSMNP is an ideal starting point as you enter the park's South District. Explore cultural history exhibits. Enjoy ranger-led programs conducted seasonally.
A short drive from the cabin, you'll find the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Tour. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Great Smoky Mountains while traveling along the Tennessee and Nantahala River. The historic trellis bridge Fontana Trestle takes you across Fontana Lake and into the beautiful Nantahala Gorge.
The town of Andrews is the trout capital of North Carolina, and we’re blessed with abundant crystal-clear waters. We have numerous fishing guides and outfitters all around the cabin.
The Nantahala River is popular for whitewater rafting, offering something for all levels of rafters. The river provides Class I through Class IV rapids depending on your entry point and season but is mostly Class II or III. The Cabin is 10 minutes from the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center), a famous spot for rafters, providing rentals and gear, food, shopping, ziplining, and more.
Explore the many waterfalls in the forest, such as Findley Falls, Dry Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.
Be sure to head to the many mountain overlooks in the area, including Wayah Bald Lookout, a historic and picturesque spot with the most incredible view!
Backstairs Cabin is about an hour’s drive from Cataloochee Ski Area, a public-use recreation area noted for its winter ski slopes. Located in Maggie Valley, the drive to Cataloochee is itself enjoyable and the slopes provide opportunities for beginner as well as advanced skiers and snowboarders.

Our area is blessed with some of the best waterways in the nation, with many lakes, rivers, and streams. Just a very short drive you'll find Chatuge Lake and Nantahala Lake, two of the most picturesque lakes in all the Carolinas! A little further north you'll find Santeetlah Lake for additional boating and fishing opportunities.
Don't forget to check out our scenic byways! We are 5 mins from the Cherohala Skyway, which is rated one of the most beautiful viewing byways in the nation. Every season provides incredible views as you traverse the Great Smoky Mountains on this beautiful stretch of road.
For the avid mushroom hunters, western North Carolina does not disappoint! Just outside the cabin, we've often had an abundance of Chanterelles, Morels, Chicken of the Woods, Hen of the Woods, Reishi, and Lions Manes.
