Iznajar Town:
Built around the ruins of the 1,200-year-old Moorish castle which tops a rocky outcrop, situated near the southerly border of Córdoba province, and serves as a natural entrance to the Sierra Subeticas Natural Park and city of Antequera.
Local cuisine reflects Iznajars position in a prime pork production region, as well as variations on classic Andaluz platos. During the February carnival, the traditional pork sausage filling is stuffed with eggs, bread, jamón and breast of turkey. Other specialties include the rich salmorejo with orange and cod, and La Porra, a cheap and filling stew of tomatoes, bread, peppers and jamón. A typical local postre, dessert, is creamed eggs.
There are many fiesta’s throughout the year, however, unsurprisingly, Semana Santa, Easter week, is the most important festival, if you've never visited Spain during Easter week, then you simply have to come. It's well worth the trip, as each region of Spain has its own way of celebrating the event.
Excursions are available in the picturesque Iznájar, nature lovers will get their money's worth, and water sports fans can enjoy the reservoir in Iznajar in pursuit of their pleasure, just 5km away.
Iznajar is where you will find beautiful hiking trails, mountain bike trails and the lake for, swimming, canoeing, rowing, kayaking and course fishing. There is also paragliding, horse riding, 4x4 safaris, cycling, bird watching and much more.
Rute:
Just 20 minutes away, overlooking Iznájar reservoir, this whitewashed town, dwarfed by the Sierra de Rute that looms above it, is best known for its manufacture of aguardiente de anís, an aniseed-flavoured liqueur, an industry that has been thriving here since the 19th-century. Try it at any of the town´s bodegas where it is produced, or see the Museo Anís on the Paseo del Fresno to find out about how anís has been produced through history and today. You can also sample this potent firewater for yourself!
Rute also produces its own celebrated cured ham and delicious sweet treats. Visit the Casa-Museo del Jamón on the Plaza de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, close to the anís museum.
The "Museo Artesanal del Mantecado, Turrón y Mazapán" offers a guided tour of the museum, with displays on traditional methods of manufacturing sweet delicacies traditionally served at Christmas such as nougat and marzipan and some old-fashioned equipment for doing so. A visit includes seeing the factory where these sweets are still produced today and the factory shop, where you can buy them.
If all this wasn´t enough for a short visit, the town also has a ruined Moorish castle and a fine Baroque church.
Just outside Rute on the road to the campsite is a famous donkey sanctuary, the Sanctuario de Burros where you can have a ride on the donkeys.
Located on the edge of the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, Rute has some great local walks, several of which are well-signposted, such as the footpath through the pine forest of Pinar de la Sierra and a section of the long-distance footpath that crosses Spain, the GR7.
Granada:
Only 1 hour’s drive, and famous for the Alhambra Palace, which by starlight is silver but by sunlight is transformed into gold. Many visitors head to Granada for the Islamic architecture and Arab-flavored street life which go hand in hand with monumental churches, old-school tapas bars and counterculture graffiti art.
For the Alhambra Palace, booking in advance is advisable.
Cordoba:
Famous for being the proud keeper of one Andalucía’s three great architectural jewels: the Mezquita. However, Cordoba is more than that. Its rich cultural and religious history attracts millions of visitors every year, and is only 1 hour and 20 mins away!
Malaga:
Just 40 minutes away, is capital of the province, with its lovely Harbour, well worth a visit. Famous for superb wines. Malaga’s cathedral at the plaza de la cathedral, is one of the most prominent buildings of the city.
Museo Automovilistico y de la Moda is definitely a must see, including makes and models of classic and historically designed cars. Interspersed in these sections are mannequins dressed in period authentic clothes and hats, and unusual jewellery and paintings of the period which give you a snapshot of these times.
I thought this collection was absolutely wonderful with all the exhibits kept in an immaculate condition. This museum was an absolute pleasure to visit.
Seville:
Famous for its architecture, and approx. 2 hours away, Seville’s architecture is a mixture of the old and new, the ancient and modern. Phoenicians, romans, Visigoths, Arabs, all have lived in this city and therefore have left a trace in buildings, urban planning and culture. Roman remains can be seen in many places in the city centre. Alcazar de Sevilla, the palace, is renowned as one of the most beautiful in Spain, being regarded as one of the most outstanding examples of mudéjar architecture found on the Iberian Peninsula.
All of this, giving you a tremendous and authentic Spanish adventure, making your whole experience a fantastic stay in this tranquil homeaway villa!
