Tihany is a village in the Balaton highlands, in the county of Veszprém, in the district of Balatonfüred. It is one of the most beautifully situated settlements in Hungary, a village rich in spectacular landscape and natural features on the Tihany Peninsula stretching into Balaton. In the center of the village stands the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany, founded in 1055 by the Hungarian king András I, who was buried in the abbey's crypt. The founding deed of the abbey is the first surviving fragment of the Hungarian language, which is preserved in the Bencés Főapátság in Pannonhalmi. The church itself was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1754. The abbey, which still operates today, is a popular tourist attraction due to its historical and artistic significance. The best view of Lake Balaton opens from here.
